Since Kaido’s flashback is seemingly evading us and Oda keeps blue-balling us I decided to share some of my thoughts on how Kaido formed the Beast Pirates and more importantly how he met his Calamities.

Let’s flash back sometime over 38 years ago:

Hachinosu Island – The Rocks Pirates are formed, led by the man forgotten by the world Rocks D. Xebec. This is considered to be the strongest Pirate Crew that ever crewed around and just how strong it actually was should be evident by the fact that 3 ex members of Rocks Pirates went on to become Emperors of the Sea. Those 3 being:

– Edward Newgate more commonly known as “Whitebeard”, The World’s Strongest Man.

– Charlotte Linlin known as “Big Mom”.

– And the “Man” himself, Kaido, The World’s Strongest Creature.

Kaido, at the time, was just an apprentice on the ship and the newest info about Kaido revealed that he is currently 59 years old, making him 21 at the time of God’s Valley.

At this point of his life, Kaido wasn’t known as the “World’s Strongest Creature” and he didn’t have his Mythical Zoan “Fish Fish Fruit: Model Azure Dragon”, so he was pretty weak at the time, at least when compared to other members. This is further supported by Sengoku saying he (and Big Mom) only got stronger since their days with Rocks.

Flashback to exactly 38 years ago:

God Valley – Rocks Pirates are defeated by combined forces of Garp and Roger and they are disbanded. Rocks is presumed dead and Kaido is given his Mythical Zoan Fruit by Big Mom indebting him to her for life. I believe sometime after, Kaido decides to form his own crew and slowly rise in the pirate World.

Rocks Pirates Dynamic:

One of the things that made Rocks’ crew infamous was their crew dynamic in which they would often kill friends and foes alike. Their lack of camaraderie caused crew members to kill each other constantly even while at sea. So what would cause a bunch of pirates that kill their crewmembers to join the same pirate group? What would make someone like Whitebeard who only ever wanted a family to join this bunch?

Remember that thing between Skypiea and Water 7? I’m talking about the Foxy dude and his “Davy Back Fight” where you compete with other Pirate Crews and if you win you get to take one of their members for your own crew. We saw this happen to Straw Hats and it is apparently the ultimate law in the Pirate World that can’t be broken, ever. If you lose, you join the other crew no question asked.

Kaido’s M.O:

As we had previously seen with Shanks being influenced by Roger, and then Luffy being influenced by Shanks when it comes to the crew size and the overall workings of those crews I believe that so was Kaido influenced by his captain and the way he would and recruiting crewmembers.

Current Kaido has an M.O. where he does not kill his opponents but rather beats them, captures them and then tries to break their will and subjugate them to serve him, a survival of the fittest. We have seen this with Killer, we have seen this with Kidd and we have seen this with Luffy. We know that a lot of Gifters were previously captains of their own crews and we know some members of The Flying 6 also used to be Captains of their crews (Sasaki and Who’s Who) that eventually joined Beast Pirates. Also Apoo and Hawkins are good examples of this being the case as well.

Furthermore, we saw that Kaido’s crew hierarchy is a subject for change because he gives lower ranking members a chance to fight higher ranking members for their positions. Most notably Who’s Who and Sasaki wanted to fight Calamities for their spot but there are also examples of headliners wanting a position in The Flying Six.

In short, Kaido was inspired by his captain, the same way Shanks was inspired by Roger, where he would recruit strong crewmembers by beating them first and then subjugating them.

Sometime between 38 and 20 years ago:

The Calamities – The 3 exceptions to this rule would be King, Queen and Jack which is what makes them so special. While Kaido generally treats his crewmembers like trash (Fodder and such), he treats Calamities, and The Flying Six to a certain extent, with more respect. After Jack gets beaten by Inu and Neko, he does not berate him for losing. He instead is supportive of him and says that he didn’t lose because he was weak but rather he lost because they were strong. And once again this moment shows that Kaido values strength over anything else.

So how did he meet and recruit Calamities? Why does he threat them differently? Good question.

King the Conflagration:

In Kaido’s introduction after Dresrossa, we learn that he was defeated multiple times, we learn that he was sentenced to death multiple times but was never been able to die and most importantly we learn that he was capture multiple times by various groups. One of those groups being the Navy.

Now this is a rather popular theory and I’m sure people have already heard of it and that is King the Conflagration being an ex guard of Impel Down. We know that Impel Down is the place where The Navy keeps captured pirates and what makes me think this is the case is the way King looks, or rather the way his outfit looks. It’s the spitting image of the outfit Shiryu wore while he was a guard in Impel Down.

Additionally, Queen calls King “a torture loving pervert” and while this might as well be just bickering between the 2 and not something that is true, it could further hint towards his previous role as a guard in Impel Down since it is infamous for its torture. Shiryu would just cut down prisoners for fun while Magellan would leave them poisoned to die. Seems to me like a bunch of torture-loving people. King would torture Kaido and try to break him but to no avail. Kaido would just take it no problem. This would make King respect Kaido’s strength enough to want to follow him as his captain which was recently revealed to be the case in the Vivre Card.

Queen the Plague:

In Chapter 1007, we learned from CP-0 during one of his captures by the Navy, Kaido was experimented on by Vegapunk who successfully managed to clone his Devil Fruit (the same one that Momo ate). We also learned during Whole Cake Island that Judge Vinsmoke worked together with Vegapunk for a period of time which would explain the cloning technology, and how Judge seemingly infused his children with Devil Fruit Powers through “Lineage Factor”.

Little before this, in Chapter 995 we learned that Queen knew Judge and it’s hinted that they have shared history together. So it’s very likely that Queen also worked with Vegapunk during his experiments on Kaido and that’s how the 2 of them met.

This is supported by the fact that Queen is something of a scientist himself. He has multiple cyborg parts (Robot Neck, Robot Arm, Laser Tongue? Can shoot his neck and tail like a snake…) and more notably, he has variety of diseases or “Plagues” he uses to kill enemies.

Furthermore, there have been multiple mentions of Vegapunk during Wano and there is a certain focus on him. He was name dropped by CP-0 and how he experimented on Kaido, Orochi requested from CP0 to meet him and probably most overlooked thing, Tama’s Teapot. Even as far as Alabasta, we learned that objects can “Eat” Devil Fruits. Then, we learned that the one who managed to do this is Vegapunk and here in Wano, we have a Teapot that ate a Tanuki Devil Fruit. Thus, it’s highly likely we can expect connection between him and Beast Pirates and Queen fits the bill.

Jack the Drought:

We know Kaido was experimented on by Vegapunk, and the most likely location where this took place is Punk Hazard. Punk Hazard has been a place where Vegapunk performed his experiments alongside Caesar Clown until few years ago when Caesar fucked it all up. King was sent from Impel Down to overlook his experimentation on Kaido and to make sure he doesn’t escape.

We also know that The Navy has obsession with Ancient Giants which is evident by the failed clones that were made on Punk Hazard. Those clones are known as the Numbers. They are currently part of Kaido’s crew. Interestingly enough, Kaido shares a lot of similarities with the Ancient Giants (his horns mostly) leading a lot to speculate he could be their descendant. We now “know” he is from an Oni race which might be the same as Ancient Giant race. This could also be a reason as to why the Navy would want to experiment on him since he might be last of his species like King, and why he is known as a “Strongest Creature” and not “Strongest Man”.

The other obsession that Navy has is with the regular giants. Giants are considered to be very powerful warriors and the Navy always wanted such strong force on their side. The only issue is that they couldn’t get any until Mother Caramel came along. So what did they do? They experimented with gigantification even before Big Mom tasked Caesar with it, so she could have Giants in her “Utopia”. One product of these experiments is Jack.

We know from Caesar’s experimentation with gigantification that it works only on kids, or at least it is most effective when it comes to kids. Well, Jack is currently 28 and that Jack wasn’t present when Wano was being conquered by Beast Pirates, so somewhere between the 20 years Jack joined them.

Kaido said he hand-picked Jack to be his All-Star. I like to think that Kaido saw Jack when he was visiting Punk Hazard to buy The Numbers and in Jack, who was being experimented on, he saw himself when he was younger. Jack and Kaido look alike a lot, especially their body shape, and that coupled with him being experimented on just like Kaido was experimented on made him want to recruit Jack.

We also know that to be considered a giant you need to be at least 12m. Jack is 8.3m tall so not quite there which would fit the pattern of “failed experiments” (The Numbers, Momo’s Devil Fruit, Dragons) that seems to be the case when it comes to Punk Hazard. “But why can’t he just be a Hybrid of Giant and something else?” well because Jack is confirmed to be full blooded Fishman. No race mixing involved.
